Get a youth club (and dedicated youth worker)
I think we should create a space that is just for young people – somewhere they can make their own. I went see a friend in another city the other week and they told me about how there had been a new youth club opened in one of the more 'problematic' bits of town last year and what a massive differenec that had made. They'd gotten local young people involved in designing the club – everything from the look of the building to the events they put on – and had hired a dedicated youth worker to run the centre, coordinate projects etc etc.
I didn't necessarily like every single thing about it – they had a very popular boxing class, which isn't my cup of tea – but that doesn't matter because the point is that the local young people loved it and were flocking to this place, which was better than them being on the streets. Some of them had even made presentations to the council and were getting involved in youth parliament through their work on the project. I think we should try and do something similar here.
Why the contribution is important
At the moment, there's just not enough for young people to do in Arlen Hill full stop. A youth club and youth worker would quickly change that. This idea has proven successful in other places and I think it would do wonders here as well. Young people need a space of their own and we need to trust them to be involved in the planning and development of any new scheme.
