Council tax surcharge for empty properties
Double council tax for properties that either
- have been vacant for more than six months, or
- are normally vacant for more than six months out of each calendar year.
Why the contribution is important
Financially penalising the owners of vacant properties in this way would either encourage them to put them to more productive use, thus increasing the availability of housing, or generate additional revenue for the local authority that could be used towards building new homes.
